Color Grading is often an invisible art, but it contributes greatly to what makes a film look “finished.” Here are some examples that show how color grading can transform an image, not just make it look “correct.” With a good color grade, it’s possible to emphasize some colors and mute others, adjust certain tones while leaving others alone, even create light sources where they didn’t exist before.

All of these examples were created in Apple Color, but it’s possible to create many of the same effects in Avid.

None of the “before” shots are considered “bad” or “mistakes.” Footage straight out of any camera, whether it’s film or video, needs adjustment. Some footage needs a little more help, but only in rare circumstances is a shot “lost” due to incorrect camera settings.
